Nigel Farage has won the Clacton by-election, securing 22,239 votes, which accounts for 63.34% of the total votes cast. The by-election, held in the Essex town of Clacton-on-Sea, saw a turnout of 44.37%.
Farage reportedly forced the by-election in early July to address ongoing questions about his financial backing. This followed revelations in April 2024 that he had received a £5 million personal gift from Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based crypto billionaire.
The parliamentary standards watchdog had announced a formal investigation into gifts received by Farage. This inquiry was paused when Farage forced the by-election but resumed on Friday morning.
All major parties declined to field candidates, describing the contest as a “media circus” and “vanity project.” Count Binface, a parody candidate, was Farage’s nearest competitor, attracting 9,455 votes, or 26.93% of the total.
