At least 37 people have died after inhaling toxic fumes while allegedly stealing petrol from a pipeline in Nigeria's Rivers State, an environmental group in the region has stated. The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC) reported that many are still missing after over 100 individuals reportedly gathered at Okari Jetty in Okrika to collect refined fuel.
Police have confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the figures of those affected, following reports of people collapsing. Local reports suggest some individuals fell into the Bonny River, while others were taken to hospital.
Theft from pipelines has been a persistent problem for decades in Nigeria's oil hub. Criminal groups have previously tapped pipelines to siphon crude oil or other petroleum products for sale on the black market or for use in illegal refineries.
Nigeria's Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has urged the public to rely on verified information as they work with other security agencies to establish the events of Thursday morning. The NSCDC condemned illegal tapping and siphoning, warning of risks to lives, the environment, and the economy.
