Coastal communities in the US North-East have experienced a second day of flooding as a powerful nor'easter storm continues to affect the region. The storm, which began on Sunday, has caused power outages for tens of thousands of homes.
Tidal surges have swamped low-lying neighbourhoods in New Jersey, while wind gusts have toppled trees on New York’s Long Island, resulting in damage to homes and utility poles. In Sea Bright, New Jersey, residents reported repeated flooding with each high tide.
The slow-moving storm was predicted to weaken over Sunday night, with local heavy rain expected in parts of New England and the mid-Atlantic. However, officials in New Jersey and New York have warned residents that high tide late on Monday could bring more flooding.
Over 100,000 customers were without power across the north-east and mid-Atlantic at times on Sunday. By Monday morning, the total number of outages across the US had decreased to approximately 55,000.
