Norfolk Letting Agent Receives Suspended Sentence for £48,858 Fraud

A Norfolk letting agent has received a 12-month suspended prison sentence for fraud offences totalling £48,858 against landlords and tenants.

  • Victoria Steele admitted to 19 offences involving 20 victims.
  • The fraud included failures to protect tenant deposits and withholding rental payments.
  • Norfolk Police have initiated action under the Proceeds of Crime Act to seek compensation for victims.

Victoria Steele, 51, who owned and operated eHomes in Swaffham, Norfolk, for 15 years until 2019, was sentenced at Norfolk Crown Court. She received a 12-month suspended prison sentence and was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work.

The case involved Steele's failure to protect tenant deposits in approved schemes and her withholding of rental payments from landlords. The business, previously known as Prestige Property Ltd, offered both full management and let-only services.

The investigation began after multiple landlords and tenants raised concerns about missing funds, unanswered enquiries, and unreturned property keys. DC Stuart D’Costa of Norfolk Police stated that Steele abused the trust placed in her, leaving victims significantly out of pocket.

Why this matters: The case highlights ongoing concerns about agent accountability and regulatory risks within the property management sector.

What this means for you: Landlords and tenants may face vulnerability when agents fail in their fiduciary duties, underscoring the importance of due diligence.
