Norovirus Risk from Toilet Flushes, 'Toasted Skin Syndrome' from Laptops

New findings suggest toilet flushes can release norovirus particles, while prolonged laptop contact can cause 'toasted skin syndrome'.

  • Particles from a 'turbulent' toilet flush can leave microbes in the air for up to 20 seconds, potentially spreading norovirus.
  • Doctors have warned against prolonged contact between laptops and the stomach, as heat can cause 'toasted skin syndrome'.

New research from Flinders University in Australia indicates that toilet flushes can release microbes into the air. Particles from a "turbulent" flush cycle may remain airborne for up to 20 seconds, potentially spreading norovirus.

Separately, doctors from University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust have issued a warning about "toasted skin syndrome." This condition, which causes a fishnet pattern on the skin, is linked to prolonged contact with heat from devices like laptops. While traditionally seen in older individuals using heating pads, it is increasingly observed in school-age children.

What this means for you: You are advised not to use your midsection as a desk to avoid "toasted skin syndrome."
