The thrill of victory is one thing, but for many parks in the North East of England, it seems the battle for recognition just hasn't been won – at least not yet. Despite the national Green Flag Awards scheme celebrating its 30th anniversary in style with a record number of accolades across the country, our region has trailed far behind its English counterparts in terms of awards secured, securing a relatively meagre 57.
While Yorkshire managed a respectable 90 and Greater London topped the charts with an astonishing 217 Green Flags, our North East parks were largely overlooked. But what's behind this regional lag? Is it a matter of under-resourced councils struggling to keep up, or perhaps a lack of awareness about the application process?
It's clear that local authorities in our region have been making different strategic decisions when it comes to participating in the scheme. Durham County Council, for instance, has opted to focus on the direct upkeep of its parks – and what fantastic results they've achieved! The council's head of environment, James Gilchrist, proudly proclaimed two Green Flags for their crematoria and cemeteries, showing a commitment to excellence that can't be ignored.
Meanwhile, Newcastle City Council has taken a similar approach, allocating £1.4 million towards park improvements and focusing on enhancing its green spaces rather than chasing awards. Their four Green Flag wins are testament to this forward-thinking strategy. Other councils in the region, such as Gateshead and Darlington Borough, have also expressed pride in their achievements, but it's Northumberland County Council that truly stands out with an impressive 14 Green Flags – a clear demonstration of their commitment to protecting and improving our beautiful countryside.
The disparity between regions raises important questions about resource allocation, strategic priorities, and awareness of the application process. While the national scheme continues to thrive, celebrating its milestone anniversary in style, our region's lower uptake demands closer scrutiny and potential solutions to address this regional challenge.
