The UK Government has announced a new programme to help coastal towns like North Shields adapt to the impacts of climate change. The Coastal Resilience Programme, which was unveiled by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, George Eustice, will provide funding for flood defence projects and support local businesses affected by the impacts of climate change.
According to the Government, the programme will provide £100 million in funding over the next five years to support flood defence projects in coastal towns like North Shields. The funding will be used to improve flood defences, enhance flood warning systems, and support local businesses in developing resilience plans.
Commenting on the announcement, George Eustice said: 'The Coastal Resilience Programme is a vital investment in the future of our coastal towns. We know that climate change is having a profound impact on these communities, and it's our responsibility to support them in adapting to these changes.'
The programme has been welcomed by local politicians, who have long called for greater support for coastal towns. North Tyneside Council leader, Norma Redfearn, said: 'We are pleased that the Government has recognized the importance of supporting our coastal towns. This funding will make a real difference to our residents and businesses.'
However, opposition politicians have raised concerns that the programme is not enough to address the scale of the challenge posed by climate change. Shadow Environment Secretary, Sue Hayman, said: 'While we welcome any funding for flood defence projects, we need to see a more comprehensive approach to addressing the impacts of climate change. This programme is just a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed.'
