Rail passengers across parts of north-west England are facing a second day of travel disruption today, 7 August 2026. This follows a power failure that affected the signalling centre controlling the railway in the region.
The power failure occurred shortly before 2pm on Thursday, leading to widespread cancellations and delays for services including CrossCountry and London Northwestern Railway. On Friday morning, services from Avanti West Coast, East Midlands Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express (TPE), and Transport for Wales continued to be affected.
National Rail stated that while trains are now able to operate, delays could persist until noon today as several trains and crew are not in their correct starting locations. Some trains across Greater Manchester and north-west England may still be cancelled or have revised journeys.
Northern Rail has advised passengers not to travel before 10am today. TPE has also told its passengers to prepare for disruption, including delays and cancellations, before midday today.
