Norway's King Harald V has been admitted to hospital and will be on sick leave for two weeks, the country's royal household announced on Monday. The palace stated that the 89-year-old monarch was hospitalised due to "fluid retention in the body that requires treatment in hospital".
King Harald, one of Europe's longest-serving monarchs, has recently been treated with cortisone for haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood condition that reduces red blood cells and can cause fatigue and shortness of breath. During his sick leave, Crown Prince Haakon, aged 53, will serve as regent.
The King has experienced other health issues, including being fitted with a pacemaker in 2024 and hospitalised in February for an infection and dehydration. In April 2024, the royal household announced a "permanent reduction" in his public engagements due to his age.
