Demolition work has begun on Gildengate House and Sovereign House, the last prominent buildings at Norwich's Anglia Square, as a major project to construct 1,100 homes progresses. On Tuesday, a large demolition machine started dismantling Gildengate House, drawing onlookers.
Norwich City Council leader Lucy Galvin stated the work would be carried out "very carefully" following previous dust clouds from other building collapses at the site. She confirmed the demolition is on track despite the discovery of human remains, believed to be from a medieval churchyard, which are being handled by archaeologists for carbon dating and storage.
Gildengate House had been used by artists for studios since 2010 until the council purchased the block. The council bought the Anglia Square site for £5.6m and the £350m project is funded by Homes England and Aviva Capital Partners.
