Nottinghamshire Police has stated that the 2023 Nottingham attacks, in which Valdo Calocane killed three people and attempted to kill three others, were not "reasonably foreseeable or preventable". This was heard at a public inquiry on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.
John Beggs KC, representing the force, challenged the idea that any police mistakes before the killings were missed opportunities, arguing that police "cannot manage dangerous paranoid schizophrenics". Calocane was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020.
The force maintained that even if an outstanding arrest warrant for Calocane had been executed, it was unlikely to have prevented the attacks. This view has been disputed by the bereaved families.
The inquiry also heard that Nottinghamshire Police did not disclose the discovery of documents containing a list of explosives, found in a bin at Calocane's address, until June 2026. These documents had not been made available to the Crown Prosecution Service or psychiatric experts.
Further violent assaults by Calocane on colleagues were also not disclosed to the inquiry team until after public hearings had taken place.
