Families of those killed in the Nottingham attacks have stated that police did not inform them a man who attempted to visit them had a history of violence. Valdo Calocane fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates, and attempted to kill three others on 13 June 2023.
Dr Sanjoy Kumar, Grace's father, said the man visited his GP surgery in London, while Emma Webber, Barnaby's mother, stated he also travelled to Somerset. Both families claim they were not informed of the man's history of mental ill health.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed it received a complaint and referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) on 24 August. The IOPC has received this referral concerning information the force allegedly withheld from the victims' families about a potential witness who tried to contact them.
The IOPC spokesperson said they are "assessing the referral" to determine further action. They acknowledged that families should have been updated after they spoke to this witness in January 2025, making the force aware of the information for safeguarding measures.
Valdo Calocane pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter and three counts of attempted murder in November 2023, receiving an indefinite hospital order in January 2024. A public statutory inquiry into the attacks is set to resume in September.
