Rescued loggerhead turtles released into North Atlantic

Three loggerhead turtles, including one found on Jersey, have been released into the North Atlantic after months of rehabilitation.

  • Crush, a loggerhead turtle found on Jersey, was released into the North Atlantic off the Azores.
  • Two other loggerhead turtles, Eden and Tiree, rescued in Scotland, were released alongside Crush.
  • Crush will be tracked for several months via a satellite tag.

Three loggerhead turtles, including one found lifeless on a Jersey beach in January, have been released into the North Atlantic off the Azores.

Crush, the turtle found on Jersey after Storm Goretti, spent six months recuperating at Weymouth's Sea Life centre in Dorset. She was released on Tuesday evening along with Eden and Tiree, who were rescued on the west coast of Scotland in 2025.

Victoria Goodier, Crush's carer, described the release as going "perfectly," though she noted there were "definitely some tears" from people on the boat. Deva Edge of Sea Life Brighton, who was also present, called it "one of the best moments of my life."

Crush was malnourished and suffering from hypothermia when she was found and was flown to Southampton for specialist treatment. She has been fitted with a satellite tag, which rescuers hope will allow them to track her journey for the next few months.

Why this matters: The loggerhead turtle species is classified as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated 2,000 breeding females globally.
