NSW Health has issued an immediate apology after a special investigation by Guardian Australia revealed that 'persons without means' are being buried in unmarked communal graves. The investigation, which used evidence from family and friends, cemetery registries, and aerial and satellite imagery, found these graves in bare patches of earth between walkways and old headstones.
The vast majority of these graves do not have a plaque or tombstone. Ryan Park, the state health minister who oversees the process, has signalled his intention to end the use of unmarked communal graves.
