Senior leaders from across the nuclear sector met in Manchester on 16 September to discuss implementing recommendations from the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce (NRTF) review. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) hosted the event, aiming to accelerate action on the review's findings.
The government commissioned the NRTF review, led by economist John Fingleton, to modernise and strengthen the UK's nuclear regulatory system. The goal is to achieve faster and cheaper progress through a more proportionate approach to risk and accelerated delivery.
David Peattie, NDA Group CEO, stated the NDA group is committed to driving forward the reforms. He highlighted the opportunity to modernise their mission, reduce decommissioning costs, and secure greater value from public investment while maintaining safety standards.
The review's recommendations centre on two main objectives: reinvigorating the sector through proportionate, risk-based decision-making and simplifying regulatory structures, and streamlining planning and environmental assessments to reduce delays from bureaucracy.
The NDA group has outlined immediate and longer-term actions to implement these recommendations. These include improving timely and cost-effective delivery, reforming processes and systems, addressing cultural issues, and implementing commercial and contractual reforms.
