Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: AI safety is an engineering problem, not legal

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that AI safety is an engineering problem that can be managed by product makers, arguing against new regulations.

  • Jensen Huang believes AI is hardware and software, controllable by humans and existing laws.
  • Huang argues that market forces will pressure companies to release safe AI products.
  • He sees no need for new laws or regulations for AI.

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang has asserted that artificial intelligence (AI) safety is an engineering challenge, not a legal one. Speaking at Salesforce's Dreamforce conference on Tuesday, Mr Huang stated that AI, being hardware and software built by humans, can be controlled by humans and existing laws.

Mr Huang argued against the need for new laws or regulations to govern AI, suggesting that the free market would sufficiently pressure companies to ensure product safety. He emphasised that companies should not release products if they are not confident in their functionality, capability, or safety.

He also stated that innovation, speed, and safe products are not a "false choice," and that companies can achieve both simultaneously. Mr Huang's perspective is that companies should pace themselves and pause if a product is deemed unsafe or out of control.

Why this matters: The stance from a prominent AI industry leader like Jensen Huang could influence discussions around future AI regulation.
