New Zealander Sophie Woods has set a new record for completing the Via Alpina, a 2,000km network of alpine trails across eight European countries. Woods finished the route in 28 days, 17 hours and 59 minutes, arriving in Monaco on 1 August.
Her time surpasses the previous record of 35 days and 21 hours, held by British runner Jake Catterall. Woods began her run on 4 July in Muggia, Italy, traversing through Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, and Monaco.
During her journey, Woods faced severe thunderstorms, heatwaves, and a swarm of horseflies. She was supported by her husband, George Woods, and photographer Zoe Salt, who assisted with nutrition, cooling, and accommodation.
