Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has announced a new investigation into GB News concerning a repeat broadcast of an interview with former US President Donald Trump. The decision comes after a series of complaints were lodged regarding the programme, specifically alleging that claims made by Mr Trump on subjects such as climate change, Islam, and immigration went unchallenged by the interviewer.
The interview, conducted by presenter Bev Turner, was originally broadcast in November of last year. At that time, Ofcom reviewed the complaints received but decided not to launch a formal investigation. However, following a second airing of the programme on 4th January 2024, a fresh wave of complaints prompted the regulator to reassess its position and initiate a formal investigation.
Ofcom's broadcasting code stipulates that news and current affairs programmes must be presented with due impartiality. This rule is designed to ensure that audiences are provided with a range of views on matters of political or industrial controversy or current public policy. The current investigation will examine whether the repeat broadcast of the Trump interview adhered to these impartiality requirements, particularly in light of the specific claims made by the former President.
