Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez, 70, has been executed by the state of Oklahoma. He was pronounced dead at 10.13am at the Oklahoma state penitentiary in McAlester.
Cuesta-Rodriguez was sentenced to death for the 2003 murder of his common-law wife, Olimpia Fisher. He had appealed for mercy, citing remorse and a lifelong struggle with mental illness, but was unsuccessful.
Two further executions are scheduled for today in the US. Darrell Hines, 66, is scheduled to be put to death by the state of Tennessee for the 1985 murder of Catherine Jean Jackson Jenkins. Jeremy Williams, 42, is scheduled for execution in Alabama for the 2021 rape and murder of a five-year-old girl.
Should all three executions proceed today in Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Alabama, it would mark the first time in over 15 years that three judicial killings have occurred in the US on a single day. All three scheduled executions are due to take place by lethal injection.
