Gary Anderson, a prisoner who absconded during his father's funeral in Northern Ireland 10 days ago, has appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court in the Republic of Ireland.
The 29-year-old was arrested on Wednesday at a campsite in Fahan, near Buncrana, by An Garda Síochána (Irish police). Garda Det Jason Conroy provided details of the arrest, charge, and caution during the hearing.
The court heard that Mr Anderson is charged with being present at Fahan Marina caravan and campsite on 23 September, having escaped from Maghaberry Prison. Garda Sgt Jim Collins told the court there was no application for bail at this time and sought directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Judge Emile Daly adjourned the case, and Mr Anderson is scheduled to appear by videolink at Letterkenny District Court later this month. His solicitor requested that the judge recommend a prison other than Castlerea Prison due to "other parties involved."
