One person has died and 102 individuals have been rescued from an Indonesian passenger ferry in the Java Sea. The Virgo Transport 8, carrying 243 people, lost contact in the early hours of Sunday morning after encountering bad weather.
Indonesia's search and rescue agency launched an operation for the vessel, which was travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin. The ferry was last reported to be about 150km south of Banjarmasin.
Search and rescue ships and a helicopter have been deployed to the scene. The search for the remaining passengers is ongoing.
