OpenAI has announced new capabilities for its software engineering agent, Codex, making it more versatile beyond a developer's laptop. The update, revealed at OpenAI's Dev Day on Tuesday, includes reusable cloud development environments that can be accessed from any device.
These reusable environments are designed to help tasks start more quickly and offer teams a shared workspace with approved settings and permissions. Developers can now run Codex on a computer, remotely from a phone, or in the cloud.
The Codex command-line interface (CLI) has also been refreshed, allowing developers to start and direct tasks using their voice. Additionally, a new /agents view aims to simplify delegating work and tracking multiple tasks simultaneously.
OpenAI is also rolling out Codex Security Cloud, a new set of tools for securing infrastructure. Developers can use these tools to scan GitHub repositories on demand or on a regular schedule, and whenever new commits arrive. Codex will then investigate findings, remove duplicates, and prepare fixes in the cloud, even when the user is inactive.
Further updates include a new code review experience within the ChatGPT desktop app, where users can explore code changes and ask Codex about potential issues. OpenAI also announced several API updates, including a new Decisions API and an updated Agents API that supports computer use and integration with Amazon's Bedrock Managed Agents.
