OpenAI announced the launch of "Dots", new personal agentic assistants, at its Dev Day event on Tuesday. Powered by GPT-6 Astra, the company describes Dots as "remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything."
Unlike previous offerings such as Codex or ChatGPT, Dots are intended to function independently of specific hardware or interfaces. They are designed to continuously pursue user-defined goals in the background with minimal oversight.
Dots are now available in ChatGPT for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets. Users can launch their primary Dot, give it a name, and customise it. OpenAI also envisions teams of Dots working together on users' behalf.
The company suggests various applications, including a software developer deploying a Dot to monitor customer feedback and implement bug fixes, or a scientist using one to rerun analysis as experimental data becomes available. Users can communicate with Dots through platforms like Slack and Teams, with text message support planned for the future.
OpenAI also foresees "specialist Dots" taking on specific responsibilities, provisioned with identities, credentials, and tools through existing systems. OpenAI is collaborating with Microsoft to integrate Dots into the company’s Agent 365 security controls.
