OpenAI announced on Monday the launch of ChatGPT for Teens, a new product designed to incorporate additional safety measures and address concerns regarding AI-assisted cheating in schools. The release follows numerous lawsuits concerning the safety of AI chatbots.
The new offering introduces a Study Mode feature, providing guiding questions and step-by-step support to help users understand material. It also includes homework reminders that appear when a teen seems to be attempting to cheat, encouraging them to use Study Mode instead. The app will also support quizzes and learning visualizations.
OpenAI states that age-appropriate protections will be enabled by default to reduce exposure to harmful or inappropriate content, based on the company's Under-18 Principles. Parents and guardians will have controls to decide when Study Mode is enabled by default and can use existing family tools for managing settings, receiving safety notifications, and setting Quiet Hours.
The company has also partnered with CodeAI to educate teens on how AI works and how to use it effectively. OpenAI already provides ChatGPT for Teachers, offering institution-managed AI access to schools.
