  • OpenAI has paused new subscriptions for its Pro plan.
  • The decision is due to 'unprecedented' demand for the new Astra model.
  • Other OpenAI plans, including API, Go, and Plus, remain available.

OpenAI has temporarily paused new subscriptions for its $200-per-month Pro plan. The company stated that demand for its newest model, Astra, has placed strain on its infrastructure.

Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s product leader, announced the move on X, explaining that the Pro plan puts the most strain on their systems. He added that other plans, such as the API, Go, and Plus, are still available.

OpenAI had indicated on Wednesday that such a change might occur, with Sottiaux describing Astra's demand as "unprecedented." The company has not specified how long Pro tier sign-ups will be disabled.

Astra, launched on September 3, has been rolling out across various OpenAI plans. The model is described as a significant advancement in areas including AI reasoning and coding.

What this means for you: If you intended to subscribe to OpenAI's Pro plan, new sign-ups are currently unavailable.
