OpenAI has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a smartphone camera maker, in a deal valued at over $300 million, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Glass Imaging, founded in 2019 and based in Los Altos, California, had previously secured approximately $30 million in funding from investors.
The company was established by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, former Apple engineers who led the development of Apple's Portrait Mode. Glass Imaging applies AI to address the physical size limitations of smartphone cameras, using neural networks to learn about specific camera systems and produce better images at the point of capture.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The ChatGPT creator is rumoured to be developing its own hardware, including smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive announced their collaboration on a device startup called io, following OpenAI's acquisition of Ive's company for $6.5 billion.
