More than 20 people are feared missing or unaccounted for after flash flooding swept through parts of the Grand Canyon on Saturday. The flooding occurred around 14:30 local time (22:30 BST) in the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch area, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
Sixty-two individuals have been airlifted out of the area so far, with further airlifts anticipated. No injuries have been reported.
The NPS stated that the flooding has caused significant damage in some areas, leading to the closure of trails. The service has warned of additional thunderstorms and heavy rainfall forecast for Sunday and Monday, which could result in "additional flash flooding, debris flows, rockfall and changing trail and river conditions."
The NPS has asked anyone with information about hikers or backpackers in the inner canyon along the Bright Angel Creek corridor on Saturday to make contact.
