A traffic accident on Sunday morning in Narragansett, Rhode Island, led to over 20 tons of squid spilling onto a highway. The incident caused hours of delays for motorists and resulted in a foul odour as crews worked to clear the decaying cephalopods.
The town’s police department stated that the accident happened when the driver of a tractor-trailer, transporting squid to a processing facility, failed to make a turn, causing the vehicle to fall onto its side. A substantial portion of the squid fell onto the roadway.
The road experienced significant traffic disruptions and an extended closure, lasting from around 9:30 am until 5:15 pm. Fire department personnel assisted crews in scraping the remains from the road surface using mechanical loaders, with afternoon temperatures in Rhode Island on Sunday rising above 27C (80F).
The driver and a passenger in the truck were not injured. The driver was cited by Rhode Island state police for failure to secure a load.
