Airports across the UK have experienced significant disruption after an air traffic control system failure led to the cancellation of over 2,000 flights. Nats, the air traffic control provider, resolved the technical issue within hours on Tuesday, but hundreds of thousands of passengers faced further delays and cancellations on Wednesday.
Passengers have reported extensive waits, with some spending hours on planes awaiting takeoff and others sleeping on airport floors. Martin Rolfe, the chief executive of Nats, has been given a week to provide a report on the reasons behind the technical failure.
British Airways stated it has rebooked over 60,000 customers on alternative flights since Tuesday and operated almost 80% of its schedule across its network on Wednesday. Virgin Atlantic has also apologised for the widespread disruption.
