A survey conducted by catering equipment supplier Nisbets has found that 27% of British adults admit to having taken something from a restaurant or pub. This comes as restaurateurs in the UK and internationally report ongoing issues with customer theft.
Jan Ostle of Wilsons in Bristol told the BBC's World at One that mother-of-pearl spoons used for serving herb sorbet are frequently stolen, requiring him to purchase approximately 28 new spoons every few months.
Reports from France indicate Michelin-starred restaurants have complained about items such as knives, candles, and even toilet roll holders being taken. In Quebec, a restaurateur reported thefts including a picnic table, a painting, and a thermostat.
Some restaurateurs have attempted various methods to address the issue, including pricing items, confronting suspected thieves, and offering amnesties for returned items.
