Max Newbold, India Armstrong, and Jake Bishop have been making waves with their debut album Elsewhere, Always, but it seems this particular cover has given them the spark they needed.
At Mad Cool 2026 in Madrid – where they absolutely killed it on stage – the band revealed that covering Styles' track has got them itching to try something more pop-friendly. And why not? Their summer of touring across Europe has already seen fans singing along to Elsewhere, Always's tracks like there's no tomorrow! Released last month, this album is the perfect follow-up to their 2025 EP Dependent, tackling themes that really resonate with young music lovers.
Newbold spilled the beans on why they chose to cover American Girls: 'We wanted something a bit poppier than our usual style,' he explained. And it seems this has led to some serious songwriting magic happening behind closed doors! With influences ranging from Kings Of Leon to U2, Overpass is now pouring all that experience into their new material.
Armstrong and Bishop are already getting creative with the rhythmic elements they've picked up from Styles' cover. And when asked about what's next for Overpass, Bishop revealed a tantalising hint: 'We want to create something more outrageous – something that people will think we'd never play!'
