  • Palestinian performers are using comedy to tell stories of occupation, exile, and war to UK and international audiences.

British Palestinian comedian Sami Abu Wardeh has opened his new Edinburgh fringe show, "Sami Abu Wardeh Hates You," using comedy to address the war in Gaza and life under occupation. Abu Wardeh, who left a 15-year career as an NHS doctor last year to pursue comedy full-time, aims to leave audiences with a feeling of togetherness and hope.

Abu Wardeh is part of a growing movement of Palestinian performers in the UK and internationally who are using humour to share their experiences. He stated that while Palestinian solidarity events often focus on grieving, comedy can offer a different approach, providing a "seed of hope."

The Palestine Comedy Club, established in 2022, is also presenting multiple productions at this year's Edinburgh fringe, including shows by founder Alaa Shehada and Hanna Shammas. The collective has worked to develop a standup scene in the occupied West Bank and bring Palestinian voices to UK audiences.

Diana Sweity, a Palestinian actor and comedian from Hebron and a member of the Palestine Comedy Club, noted that comedy allows Palestinians to speak for themselves and spread their stories to the world. She believes that laughter is an international language that can help people maintain their spirit and hope.

Why this matters: Palestinian comedians are using humour as a means of expression and storytelling, offering a different perspective on the conflict and fostering a sense of community and hope amidst difficult circumstances.
