A Ukrainian drone strike on an industrial city deep inside Russia has killed at least 13 people, according to the local mayor. Kyiv confirmed it hit the Taneko refinery in Nizhnekamsk, located around 1,200km (750 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Ukraine's general staff stated the raid was part of a campaign to reduce the "military potential of the Russian aggressor." Footage circulating online appeared to show smoke rising from the refinery. Russian investigators claimed civilian and industrial sites in the city were hit, with the head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, reporting that a drone struck a hostel, killing nine people.

The Uzbek consulate said seven of the victims were Uzbek citizens. Minnikhanov declared a day of mourning, while Russian prosecutors opened a criminal case into alleged "terrorism." If confirmed, the death toll would make this one of the deadliest Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Sunday that "long-range sanctions" against the Kremlin and its war machine would continue. He described his country's remote bombing campaign as "entirely justified," adding that "Russia's war will be felt more and more at their own home – in Russia."

Separately, the governor of the Tyumen region in western Siberia reported on Monday that several Ukrainian drones had fallen on an industrial facility, with emergency services addressing a fire.

Why this matters: This strike, if the death toll is confirmed, would be among the deadliest Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory, highlighting the increasing reach of Kyiv's long-range operations deep inside Russia.
