Ivor Pandur, the new goalkeeper for Rangers, has disclosed that he declined the opportunity to remain with Hull City for their return to the Premier League. The 26-year-old Croatian international stated that he was informed by the club of their intention to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper with prior Premier League experience this summer, a factor that ultimately influenced his decision to move to Ibrox.
Pandur’s arrival at Rangers coincides with former England international Jack Butland’s transfer to Hull City. Despite his manager, Sergej Jakirovic, expressing a desire for him to stay and play, Pandur confirmed that the club's hierarchy had a different vision for their goalkeeping position. He made 48 appearances for Hull last season, playing a crucial role in their successful promotion campaign via the play-offs.
The move to Rangers has been a long-standing possibility, with Pandur revealing that initial contact from the Scottish club began even before he joined Hull from Fortuna Sittard in 2024. He believes the timing is now more opportune, stating he has significantly developed as a player over the past few years and sees Rangers as the ideal environment for further improvement. Ongoing discussions throughout the past season culminated in a swift agreement once a formal approach was made.
A significant draw for Pandur was the return of Rangers legend Allan McGregor as the club's goalkeeping coach. Pandur expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to learn from McGregor, who boasts extensive experience in European competition and with the Scottish national team. He views McGregor's presence as a key factor in his decision, aiming to develop under one of the club's most celebrated figures.
Before finalising his move, Pandur sought advice from former Hull teammates John Lundstram and Kieran Dowell, both of whom have played for Rangers, as well as ex-Rangers striker Antonio Colak. He was made aware of the high expectations and pressure associated with playing for Rangers, a challenge he embraces. Pandur stated his desire to compete at the highest level and believes Rangers, one of Europe's prominent clubs, offers the perfect platform.
