At least 44 people have been injured, including one seriously, after a passenger train derailed in northern France. Local officials reported that an 18-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot stated that 180 passengers were on board the train, which was operating between Rouen and Caen in Normandy. The derailment occurred on Friday evening near the commune of Cléon, just south of Rouen.
Emergency teams, including 140 firefighters, were deployed to the scene. The local authorities activated a mass-casualty response plan after the crash, which happened shortly before 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT). The cause of the derailment is not yet known.
France's state-owned railway operator SNCF reported "significant disruptions" in the area and announced that replacement buses would be provided. French media reported that three carriages overturned, and photographs showed passengers leaving the crashed train.
