A new contactless system allowing passengers to pass through airport e-gates without showing their passport has begun its rollout in the UK, the government has announced. East Midlands Airport became the first to offer this technology on Tuesday, with plans for it to be implemented at all UK airports by early 2027, according to the Home Office.
The system operates by taking a photo of passengers as they approach the e-gate. This image is then checked against immigration, travel, and passport information. If verified, the barrier opens automatically.
Officials stated that testing indicated the new contactless system was up to 25% faster than the traditional method of using a passport. However, travellers may still need to place their passport on a reader or be directed to a Border Force officer if further checks are required. The Home Office advises passengers to keep their passports with them at all times.
