Democrat Mary Peltola and incumbent Republican Dan S Sullivan are currently leading in the Alaska primary election for the US Senate. With 66% of the votes counted, Peltola holds 46.8% of the vote, closely followed by Sullivan with 44.4%.
Sullivan is seeking a third term in the Senate, while Peltola is campaigning to flip the seat, which could aid Democrats in their efforts to regain control of Congress. The non-partisan primary, held on Tuesday, will see four candidates advance to the general election scheduled for November.
A third candidate, Dan J Sullivan, a retired schoolteacher, is in third place with 2.4% of the vote. The state supreme court ruled in June that Dan J Sullivan was qualified to run for the seat, despite arguments from Republicans that his candidacy was an interference tactic against Senator Sullivan.
