In a period of elevated living costs, Age UK has issued a significant call to action, urging older people across the UK with low and modest incomes to ascertain their eligibility for Pension Credit. The charity stresses that now is a particularly vital time to claim this benefit, which could provide a substantial financial lifeline and unlock access to a range of other crucial support mechanisms.
Pension Credit is a top-up benefit designed to ensure pensioners have a guaranteed minimum income. For single individuals, this is currently £201.05 per week, and for couples, it stands at £306.85 per week. Age UK estimates that, on average, Pension Credit can provide eligible households with an additional £3,900 per year. This significant sum can make a tangible difference to household budgets, particularly as inflation, while moderating, continues to impact the price of everyday essentials.
Beyond the direct financial uplift, securing Pension Credit acts as a gateway to a host of other valuable concessions and benefits. These include Housing Benefit for those renting, Council Tax Support, free NHS dental treatment and prescriptions, and Cold Weather Payments, which provide £25 for each seven-day period of very cold weather between November and March. Furthermore, for those with children, Pension Credit can open up access to free school meals. The comprehensive nature of these associated benefits underscores the broader economic relief that Pension Credit can offer to vulnerable households.
Despite its considerable benefits, Pension Credit remains one of the most underclaimed welfare benefits in the UK. Government figures suggest that around £1.7 billion in Pension Credit goes unclaimed annually, representing a significant amount of money not reaching those who need it most. Age UK's renewed push aims to bridge this gap, encouraging more older people to check their eligibility and apply, thereby bolstering their financial resilience against ongoing economic pressures.
A notable incentive for prospective claimants is the potential to receive a backdated cost of living payment. If an application for Pension Credit is made before 10th December 2023, and subsequently approved, claimants could still be eligible for the £600 cost of living payment that was distributed earlier in the year. This potential for a substantial lump sum further highlights the immediate financial advantages of acting promptly.
The current economic climate, characterised by persistent inflation and high interest rates set by the Bank of England to combat it, continues to squeeze household incomes. While the FTSE 100 has shown some resilience, the broader economic picture means that every additional source of income and support is more critical than ever for those on fixed or low incomes. Pension Credit offers a vital safety net, helping to mitigate some of these pressures for the UK's older population.
