The PGA Tour has ratified a new competition structure that will introduce a two-tier system in 2028. Under the new plan, winners of golf's four majors and The Players Championship will receive the same rewards as victors in elite Championship Series events.
The new structure will divide competitions into a top-tier Championship Series and a lower-tier Challenger Series, differentiated by field strength and purse size. The PGA Tour boards approved the plan on Monday.
Significant adjustments have been made to tour exemptions. From 2028, a victory in any Championship Series event, including majors and The Players, will grant a two-year Championship Series exemption. This is a change from the previous five-year PGA Tour exemption for major winners and The Players champion.
Access to the Championship Series will be restricted to the top 90 players from the prior season, the top 20 from the Challenger Series, and other specific categories. A post-season "Last Chance Series" will also award three places in the top tier to players who participate in every autumn tournament.
