Colourful chaos erupted in the idyllic West Bengal countryside as photographer Monojit Dutta snapped an unmissable moment of carefree childhood. A trio of young rascals let rip on a Sunday morning, balloons flying high above their joyful shouts and laughter as they chased each other under an endless sky.
Dutta's photographic adventure began with a sunrise train ride from Kolkata to Canning – a picturesque riverside town where the River Matla flows gently by. With a stash of balloons at his disposal, he set out to capture the essence of this special day, which coincided with the end of annual school exams for local youngsters.
As he chanced upon a group of lively lads playing in an open field, Dutta scattered the balloons and watched as three of them broke free from their games. With just one gentle nudge, they were off – chasing each other round in circles, jumping and spinning with abandon. The resulting photos, he proudly claimed, were entirely natural and unscripted, capturing the pure essence of childhood play.
As Dutta reviewed his shots later by the river, he marveled at the dynamic duo's antics. Nine or ten years old, they had bundles of energy to burn, running in a blur as they chased each other around. One memorable moment stood out: when one lad began to tire and fell slightly behind, creating an intriguing balance within the frame – two boys soaring through the air on the left, while their mate remained firmly planted on terra firma to the right.
Dutta made some minor tweaks to his smartphone edit, tweaking saturation and contrast for a knockout finish. His aim was clear: to showcase a world where kids can play freely under an open sky, and bask in the unbridled joy of a Sunday afternoon that knows no bounds – a sentiment we can all relate to.
