A pilot scheme that uses live football matches to support mental health has received praise, prompting calls for the Premier League and Football League to adopt the initiative. Under the "Football on Prescription" scheme, GPs have recommended live matches to patients suffering from mild to moderate depression and other less severe conditions over the past year.
The initiative, which began in August 2025 at Forest Green Rovers, is supported by Labour MP and GP Simon Opher and Ecotricity founder Dale Vince, who owns the club. Patients receive complimentary match tickets and are met by regular fans prior to kick-off.
One participant, Sarah Bartlett, a teacher and carer, described the experience as "just enough of a lift to really make a difference." Dr Opher, who has pioneered social prescribing, noted that the scheme is being put on "repeat prescription" as the partnership has been renewed.
Both Ms Bartlett and the organisers have called for the scheme to be expanded to the Football League and Premier League. However, neither league has confirmed whether they will introduce the "football on prescription" scheme.
