Sony has confirmed an increase in the cost of its PlayStation Plus subscription service across all three available tiers. Gamers in the UK and globally will see the prices for Essential, Extra, and Premium memberships rise, with the changes set to take effect from September 6th.
The most significant increases are applied to the 12-month subscription options. The annual PlayStation Plus Essential tier, which provides online multiplayer access, two monthly downloadable games, and cloud storage, will now cost £59.99, up from its previous price of £49.99. The mid-tier PlayStation Plus Extra, offering a catalogue of hundreds of PS4 and PS5 games, will increase from £83.99 to £99.99 per year. The top-tier PlayStation Plus Premium, which includes classic games, game trials, and cloud streaming, will see its annual price jump from £99.99 to £119.99.
While the focus is on annual subscriptions, the price adjustments also extend to monthly and quarterly plans, albeit with smaller percentage increases. For instance, the monthly Essential tier remains at £6.99, but the Extra and Premium tiers will see slight bumps. Sony has stated that existing 12-month subscribers will not be affected by the new pricing until their next renewal date, provided it is on or after November 6th. Any renewals before this date will be processed at the old price.
This move follows a trend of subscription service price hikes across various industries, often attributed to rising operational costs and inflation. PlayStation Plus, a crucial service for many PlayStation owners, offers access to online multiplayer features, a library of games, and exclusive discounts. The increase is likely to prompt some subscribers to re-evaluate their membership choices, particularly for those on the higher tiers.
The last major overhaul of the PlayStation Plus service occurred in June 2022, when Sony merged it with PlayStation Now, creating the current three-tiered structure. At the time, the company aimed to offer more competitive options against rivals like Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass. These new price changes represent a significant adjustment for the service since that restructure.
Sony has yet to issue a detailed statement explaining the specific reasons behind the price increases beyond general economic factors. The company will likely monitor subscriber reactions and renewal rates closely in the coming months as the new pricing takes full effect.
