Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea should be stripped of their 2016-17 Premier League title due to financial rule breaches, with the honour retrospectively awarded to Tottenham.

  • The breaches involved unlicensed agents and obscuring transfer business between 2009 and 2022.

Mauricio Pochettino has called for Chelsea to be stripped of their 2016-17 Premier League title, arguing it should be retrospectively awarded to Tottenham, the team he managed to second place that season.

Chelsea faced a £10m fine from the Football Association in July and a suspended two-window transfer ban for multiple rule violations during the Roman Abramovich era. The club also received a £10.75m fine from the Premier League in March.

The breaches included using unlicensed agents and obscuring transfer business between 2009 and 2022, with deals for players like Eden Hazard, Willian, David Luiz, and Nemanja Matic among those found to have transgressed. These players were central to Chelsea's 2016-17 triumph under Antonio Conte.

Pochettino, who later managed Chelsea in 2023-24, stated, "The title should be for the team that was second." He believes the authorities did not go far enough in their punishment, asserting that his Spurs team, which finished seven points behind Chelsea, deserved the title if rules were broken.
