Pocognoli seeks first Scotland win against North Macedonia

Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli is still searching for his first victory after a goalless draw with Slovenia and a 3-0 defeat to Switzerland.

  • Jack Hendry is suspended for the upcoming match against North Macedonia after receiving an early red card against Switzerland.
  • North Macedonia are the lowest-ranked side in Nations League Group B1.
  • Aaron Hickey could return to the squad after being rested against Switzerland.

Scotland's head coach, Sebastien Pocognoli, is aiming for his inaugural win as the team prepares to face North Macedonia in Skopje. The Belgian manager has overseen a goalless draw in Slovenia and a 3-0 home defeat to Switzerland in his first two matches.

The upcoming fixture will see at least one enforced change, with centre-half Jack Hendry suspended following an early red card against Switzerland. Pocognoli had previously promised to give many players a chance to impress during his initial four-game international camp.

Potential changes could see Luke Graham make his Scotland debut, while Aaron Hickey, rested against Switzerland due to his injury record, could return. There has been pundit clamour for Hickey to move to right central defence, potentially to make space for winger Ben Gannon-Doak.

In midfield, John McGinn's place could be under threat after being less influential in the last two games, though no standout replacements for his number 10 role are apparent. Up front, Oli McBurnie, who has impressed in recent matches, will be hoping for a third straight start.

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn has faced criticism for Switzerland's goals, but alternatives are limited. North Macedonia are the lowest-ranked side in Nations League Group B1 and have already lost to Switzerland and Slovenia.

Why this matters: A victory against North Macedonia is seen as crucial for Scotland's outside chances of finishing top or second in Nations League Group B1.
