Fourteen people have been arrested after police officers came under "significant attacks" during violent disorder that marred Celtic's Scottish Premiership title celebrations in Glasgow city centre on Saturday.
Chief Superintendent Gerry McLean condemned the assaults on his officers following Celtic's 5-0 victory over Kilmarnock, which secured the club's third consecutive league title. Several officers sustained injuries during confrontations with a minority of the thousands of fans who had gathered to celebrate.
"Officers were deployed to manage the large crowds and facilitate safe celebrations," said McLean, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow. "However, a minority engaged in unacceptable behaviour, which included direct assaults on police personnel."
Police Scotland has not disclosed the full extent of the officers' injuries, but described them as significant enough to warrant public condemnation. The 14 arrested individuals face charges including public disorder and assault.
Investigators are now examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify additional suspects involved in the violence. The incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by authorities in balancing public celebrations with maintaining order during major sporting events in Scotland.
