A man has died following what police believe was a violent brawl between rival motorcycle gangs in the south Wales valleys. Anthony “Tony” Jones, 56, of Brecon, died in hospital from his injuries after the incident in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, last Thursday evening.
Gwent Police’s senior investigating officer, Det Supt Laura Bartley, stated on Tuesday night that investigators believe members of the Vikings and Hells Angels biker gangs were involved. The violence reportedly involved knives and hammers, and at least a dozen men were involved.
Firearms officers, a police helicopter, and ambulances were called to the scene. Three people were taken to hospital, with at least one suffering critical injuries. Ten men, aged between 31 and 73, have been arrested, and seven of them remain in custody.
Police have appealed for Anthony Paul Jones, 40, from Blaenavon, Torfaen, to come forward as part of the investigation. Officers are also searching for a blue Ford Transit van with the registration plate MA23 FLC. A police cordon is still in place outside the British Legion Club in Pontnewynydd for forensic work, and Torfaen council indicated that nearby Hospital Road could remain closed until the weekend.
