  • A wanted person was identified and arrested during the operation.

Cumbria Police deployed an undercover HGV last week as part of Operation Tramline, a road safety initiative aimed at reducing collisions. The lorry was used in convoy with unmarked police vehicles to allow officers to see into the cabins of other lorries and gain a better view of the roads.

During the operation, eight motorists were caught using their mobile phones while driving. Other offences included speeding, not using a seatbelt, driving with an insecure load, and operating a vehicle with serious defects, police said.

A wanted person was identified and arrested, a vehicle was observed reversing the wrong way up a motorway slip road, and another individual was caught driving without a licence. Inspector Holly Lockwood, who led the operation, stated that police would be watching and would seek to prosecute offenders where necessary.

One motorist, Iluian, was fined £100 after being caught playing a film on a tablet while driving on the motorway. Another driver, Gordon, received a speeding ticket for driving at 93mph, 23mph over the limit.
