The Policy Insights Unit (PIU) is offering end-to-end data analysis support to government departments and arm's-length bodies. This initiative aims to assist teams in developing analysis and ideas for policy.
The support provided by PIU is tailored to individual project needs. It can include identifying relevant data, designing new data collection methods such as surveys, and gathering and organising data. The unit also helps with data analysis using tools like R and Excel, identifying key trends, creating visualisations, and producing outputs for various audiences, including ministerial briefings and external reports.
Recent examples of PIU's work include a rapid evidence synthesis on the drivers of the 'not in education, employment or training' (NEET) rate among 16 to 24-year-olds in the UK. Other projects include an evidence review on demographic change and public services, and a data-led review to support the early development of the Opportunity Mission.
The commissioning process for PIU support typically starts with a conversation to clarify needs and can take as little as a week to scope and agree on the work.
