Passengers using the Portsmouth Direct Line are being advised to prepare for significant disruption throughout February as Network Rail undertakes essential engineering works. The upgrades, scheduled to run for two weeks from Saturday, February 10th to Sunday, February 25th, will impact services between Havant and Guildford.
During this period, no trains will operate on the affected stretch of the line. Instead, rail replacement bus services will be put in place to help passengers complete their journeys. Travellers are strongly encouraged to check their routes and allow for extra travel time, as bus journeys will take longer than usual train services.
The extensive programme of works includes a range of critical infrastructure improvements. Engineers will be renewing sections of track, upgrading drainage systems, and carrying out vital maintenance on bridges along the route. These enhancements are designed to improve the overall reliability of the line, reduce the risk of future service interruptions, and ensure the long-term safety of the railway infrastructure.
Network Rail has stated that these works are a crucial part of their ongoing commitment to modernising the railway network. While acknowledging the inconvenience to passengers, the organisation emphasised that carrying out such comprehensive upgrades requires temporary closures to ensure the safety of both workers and the public. They aim to complete the work as efficiently as possible to minimise disruption.
Both Network Rail and South Western Railway, which operates services on the line, are advising passengers to consult their websites or journey planners well in advance of their travel dates. Detailed information regarding specific service changes, rail replacement bus timetables, and alternative routes will be available to help passengers navigate the temporary changes.
