Portugal beat Norway 2-1 to reach Nations League quarter-finals

Holders Portugal maintained their 100% Nations League record with a 2-1 home win over Norway, sealing a place in the March quarter-finals, while Erling Haaland limped off for Norway.

  • Portugal beat Norway 2-1 in Porto to secure a top-two finish in Group A4 and a place in the March quarter-finals.
  • Erling Haaland requested to be substituted in the 67th minute and limped off the pitch.
  • Francisco Conceicao was sent off four minutes from time after receiving a yellow card.

Holders Portugal maintained their 100% record in the Nations League with a 2-1 home win over Norway on Sunday, sealing a place in the March quarter-finals.

The result shifted the focus further away from Cristiano Ronaldo's abrupt exit from the squad last week. Portugal were still under a cloud from Ronaldo's dispute with coach Jorge Jesus, but they were triumphant without him in Denmark last Thursday and continued their winning ways in Porto.

Erling Haaland sparked concern for Norway and Manchester City by requesting he be substituted in the 67th minute of the tie, and limped off the pitch.

Norway took the lead in the 36th minute through centre-back Kristoffer Ajer, who hit a dipping half-volley from the edge of the box. Joao Cancelo equalised two minutes later, and Goncalo Ramos netted the winner 11 minutes from time, scoring off his calf after Joao Felix had headed across goal.

Portugal's win was soured by a red card for Francisco Conceicao four minutes from time; he gave the referee a cynical thumbs up after receiving a yellow card and was immediately handed his marching orders.

Portugal moved six points ahead of second-placed Denmark, who won 1-0 at Wales. In Group A2, the Netherlands took over at the top after beating Serbia 2-1 in Eindhoven, but only on goal difference from Greece, who held on for a goalless draw at home to Germany.

Why this matters: Portugal have secured a place in the March quarter-finals with a 100% record, while Haaland's injury is a concern for Norway and Manchester City.
